Why Snowmobile LED Headlight Fitment Matters
Snowmobiles are not the same electrically as cars, and even sleds from the same manufacturer can use different headlight systems depending on the year, model and platform.
Correct snowmobile LED headlight fitment can depend on:
- Year, make and model
- Factory bulb size
- H4, H11, H13 or another bulb configuration
- AC versus DC headlight power
- Whether an AC-to-DC rectifier is required
- High-beam and low-beam configuration
- Bulb orientation inside the reflector
- Clearance behind the headlight housing
- Replaceable bulb versus factory sealed LED housing
This is why LEDPowersport® focuses on powersports-specific fitment rather than treating every snowmobile like an automotive application.

AC vs. DC Snowmobile Headlights: Do You Need a Rectifier?
One of the most important things to determine before installing LED headlights on a snowmobile is whether the factory headlight circuit supplies AC or DC power.
LED headlights require suitable DC power. Some snowmobiles supply AC power directly to the factory halogen headlights. On those machines, the correct AC-to-DC rectifier must be used with the LED system.
General fitment trends include:
- Ski-Doo: Most applications are DC and typically do not require a rectifier.
- Polaris: Electrical systems vary by model and year; many applications require a rectifier.
- Arctic Cat: Many applications use AC headlight power and require a rectifier.
- Yamaha: Requirements vary by model and platform.
These are general guidelines only. Always verify the exact electrical system for your snowmobile before installing LEDs.

What Makes a Good Snowmobile LED Headlight Upgrade?
Brightness matters, but raw lumen numbers are only part of a good snowmobile headlight setup. The light also needs to work properly with the reflector, electrical system and riding conditions.
Important factors include:
- Correct bulb fitment so the LED sits properly inside the factory housing
- Beam positioning so light is directed down the trail instead of scattered
- Electrical compatibility with the sled's AC or DC system
- Cold-weather durability for snowmobile use
- Proper heat management for the LED chips and driver
- High and low beam operation when required by the factory system
An extremely bright bulb with poor positioning can create scattered light and glare. That is one reason our High Power Series uses an indexable design that allows the LED position to be adjusted in compatible housings.
LED vs. Halogen Snowmobile Headlights
Many snowmobiles originally equipped with replaceable halogen bulbs can be upgraded to LED lighting without replacing the complete headlight housing.
A properly selected snowmobile LED headlight conversion can provide:
- Brighter, whiter illumination
- Improved nighttime trail visibility
- More modern light color than yellow factory halogen bulbs
- Instant full light output
- Long LED operating life
- A direct replacement installation on compatible machines
The correct result depends on choosing a kit designed for the specific bulb, reflector and electrical system in your sled.
Common Snowmobile Headlight Bulb Sizes
Snowmobiles use several different headlight bulb configurations. Some of the common replaceable bulb types we work with include:
- H4 / 9003 – combined high and low beam bulb used in many snowmobile applications
- H13 / 9008 – combined high and low beam bulb used on numerous newer machines
- H11 / H8 / H9 – used in certain powersports headlight configurations
- 880 / 881 – found on some powersports applications
Do not order based only on the appearance of the bulb or connector. Verify your year, make, model and factory bulb configuration first.

Snowmobile LED Headlight Installation
Many LEDPowersport® snowmobile headlight kits install in the factory headlight location using the original connector and mounting system. Compatible applications do not require cutting or splicing.
Before installation:
- Confirm the correct bulb size
- Confirm whether the headlight circuit is AC or DC
- Install the appropriate rectifier if required
- Wear clean latex or rubber gloves when handling LED components
- Confirm proper bulb seating and orientation
- Check and adjust the headlight beam after installation
Proper bulb orientation is especially important with high-output LEDs because the position of the LED chips affects how the factory reflector distributes the light.
